First Nations In The Exam
What Could This Look Like on the Exam?
What types of questions?
You may be asked to explain how knowledge of the local environment could influence the design of an engineered system.
A strong response establishes a cause and effect:
Knowledge of the environment > influences a design decision > produces an outcome.
Analyse how First Nations perspectives could contribute to the sustainable development of the proposed system.
Break the situation apart.
Consider:
- the proposed system
- Country and environmental conditions
- people or communities affected
- possible positive and negative impacts
- how First Nations knowledge could change the design
"First Nations people care for the environment" or "Considering First Nations perspectives allows them to engage in their culture"
Instead, identify a specific connection between knowledge and a design decision.
Ethical Design
First Nations questions will often cross over with Ethical Design. For Ethical, we usually look at social, environmental, and economic. For First Nations, we look at cultural ethics. Possible considerations include:
- consultation
- ownership of cultural knowledge
- culturally significant sites
- community involvement
- who benefits from the system
- environmental responsibility
Your response should explain why the consideration matters, not simply name it.
A Simple Exam Approach
When First Nations perspectives appear in a stimulus, ask yourself:
COUNTRY → KNOWLEDGE → DESIGN → IMPACT
Country
What is significant about the particular place or environment?
Knowledge
What knowledge or understanding exists?
Design
How has or could that knowledge influence the system or a design decision?
Impact
What effect does this have on people, the environment, sustainability or system performance?
Do not bolt a First Nations example onto the end of an answer.
Explain how the perspective or knowledge actually changes the way the system is understood, designed or evaluated.
Exam Checklist
If a question includes an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander perspective, check that your answer:
- responds to the specific stimulus
- explains the engineering involved
- links knowledge to a design decision or system behaviour
- considers Country and place
- considers environmental, social or cultural impacts where relevant
- avoids broad generalisations about all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- recognises that different Nations and communities have different knowledge, cultures and practices
- uses the command term — such as explain, analyse, discuss or evaluate — correctly.
